Workshop #2 on Huis van de Toekomst
News & Updates
The second workshop took place on April 24-25 at Huis van de Toekomst, aiming to sketch two Transition-Scape prototype concepts for further development and testing. The design brief was based on conclusions from the first workshop earlier this year.
During the workshop, we explored (1) the J.J.P. Oud block spaces that are currently available and the initiatives they host, (2) an alternative value system and how we would model it, (3) possible connections between the model and the reality, and (4) whether the Transition-Scape is mainly about an experience or about the modelling visualisation.
Day one concluded with rapid prototyping presentations by AUAS – Master Digital Design students, introducing inspiring aspects of community forming, sharing and exchange, public space activation and creative ways of engaging with utility corporations. Day two focused on visualizing and interchanging the four values identified in the first workshop: uur (time), huur (rent / money), buur (community power), and vuur (personal growth).
We identified two main directions that the Transition-Scape could follow. The first is a community-forming tool, with which citizens understand that they can achieve impact with what they have available. The second is a management tool that supports Huis van de Toekomst and its collaborating parties in visualizing, and thus, acknowledging social and other benefits that are now hidden from their processes. Dirk Bertels and Arthur van Schravendijk are developing a concept design for the prototype, to be built by students after the Summer and tested with stakeholders during the After Summer School, organized by Nieuwe Instituut, at Huis van de Toekomst in early October.
