Students Develop Interactive Tools to Engage Future Residents in Sustainable Living at Haven-Stad

Student Projects

Two groups of students of the AUAS – Minor Urban Interaction Design worked on interactive conversation starters to involve future residents in new ways of sustainable living in Haven-Stad. They primarily focused on people between 18 and 30 years old. One group presented a game named Future Durable Living. Players are challenged to understand different points of view in an environment they share with others. The second group designed a so-called Mobile Dilemma Table that could travel to different locations.

Players would first receive a stack of puzzle pieces with which they had to make choices about their lifestyle preferences regarding their own home. Once the choices were made, they could turn their pieces around to discover if they had made green (sustainable) or blue (not sustainable) choices. The player with the most sustainable choices was allowed to pick a stakeholder card first. Each of the four cards represented a stakeholder (entrepreneurs, future residents, city of Amsterdam and citizen initiatives) and four associated statements to defend. A discussion would then unfold amongst all players. Once a general understanding was reached between them, a building block could be earned. Together they would build a block tower and therefore the future.

Visitors would take a seat at a table with one shared screen and several individual touch screens. Here, players would be confronted with several questions on issues like energy use and community power. Players were invited to discuss their answers with each other. Once all the questions had been answered, an image of a future street scene would be generated. Again, this image would be part of a shared discussion.
