In anticipation of the Netherlands becoming gas-free by 2050, Bospolder-Tussendijken (BoTu) is one of the first Rotterdam districts to switch off natural gas. Housing corporation Havensteder is making 1,300 homes here gas-free. In addition, the residents themselves play a major role.
On December 13th 2023, representatives of Havensteder, Eneco, the municipality of Rotterdam and Huis van de Toekomst signed an agreement for the symbolic transfer of a plinth of the building of the J.J.P. Oudblok to Huis van de Toekomst. From January 2024 onwards, Huis van de Toekomst will temporarily take care of the management itself. In the ground-floor apartments, residents and neighborhood initiatives will experiment to generate and share energy themselves. Ranging from heating your home with body heat to making woolen blankets. There is also a curtain workshop, a baking and cooking house, an energy workshop, and a house for the soul. The goal is to set up a temporary energy community and housing cooperative of the future.
